How to Heal Scars
How quickly a wound heals is affected by several factors, including your age and overall health, the type of injury, its location on the body, and how it’s cared for.
Fresh Scars will show the most improvement in the initial 3-6 months. During this period, doctors recommend silicone as the best treatment to minimize scarring.
Mature Scars can be treated by at-home scar treatments or medical procedures. If medical procedures are not in the budget, scar concealers can hide the discoloration and uneven skin.
What Causes Scars?
Scars can be caused by any type of damage or wound to the skin. Scars heal in phases over weeks and months, even years. The body naturally produces new collagen fibers to mend the skin which results in a scar after the wound has completely healed. The repaired skin may look and feel different than the undamaged skin around it. Not every scar will leave a dramatic mark and some may disappear over time.
Most “normal” scars will show the most dramatic changes within the first 3 months after the wound has closed. We have collected scar resources here to give you some ideas on how to optimize the scar healing process and conceal scars during this remodeling period.
